During university holidays, I work a paid full time job as a server at my local pub. However, I had to balance this alongside university studies this summer as some of my modules were impacted by COVID-19, helping me to learn effective time management and become more organised and efficient. My duties include working on and around the bar, running food, taking payments and occasionally helping in the kitchen when the restaurant is busy, meaning I have to adapt quickly. The customer service aspect of this job, involving meeting and interacting with new people everyday, means I am a confident individual with great communication skills. Working in a people-orientated environment as part of a team is a crucial part of the job and has made me open and has given me teamwork skills which I have further used and retained through group projects at university. Another part of my job involves designing new blackboards for in-house advertisements as well as taking photos for the pub's Instagram account, enabling me to develop social media and creative skills. During Summer 2020, I took part in the Nottingham Consultancy Challenge, which is usually an in-person task but had moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While this was harder as I find things much easier face-to-face, it gave me experience at working remotely and using software such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom. While this was harder as I find things much easier face-to-face, it gave me experience at working remotely and using software such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom. The task involved providing consulting advice for a charity called Shoe Aid to enable them to expand their existing distribution network, giving me experience in consulting which was a field I had never considered before as a career. I gained report writing and presentation skills, as these provided the format that the client wanted our results in, and also used the opportunity to network with students from other courses and years as the challenge was university-wide. I attended seminars about subjects such as Networking, Selling and Competitor Analysis, which enabled me to gain skills in these fields which I had never really considered before. I also completed a well-received work sample simulating a real-world marketing task about car hire which involved researching new areas and creating and presenting a PowerPoint presentation based on my findings. In turn, I marked a peer's sample, honing my analysis skills. Show more Show less

During my internship at Foster+Partners, I undertook a project within the Architecture department designing a convertible, reusable market stall relevant to an actual ongoing Foster + Partners' project based in Marseille. I also took part in presentation workshops; the skills I learned enabled me to successfully deliver a presentation at the end of the internship about my project to a team of Senior Partners. I was taught how to operate AutoCAD and Rhino design programmes and to laser cut and 3D print, and 3D printed my stall design in order to help with my presentation. As I was about to begin studying Chemical Engineering at UoN, I spoke to the relevant people and was able to spend time in the Environmental Engineering department, learning about many new topics from weather profiling to effects of seismic activity; the skills I developed have already proved invaluable during my degree.
