I maintained the order and cleanliness of the Departmental greenhouse for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I also built, moved, and disassembled various structures used for various experimental set ups. Cleanliness and organization ensured accurate data for studies on plant-microbe interactions being conducted co-currently in the greenhouse.

Working in Dr. Keith Clay's Lab I performed DNA extractions, PCR, culture isolations, gel electrophoresis and analyzed the resulting images for studies of the endophytes inhabiting the plants Convolvulaceae and Cyperaceae Cyperus sp. with the goal of identifying and creating pure isolates in order to research their chemical properties

Working in Dr. Farrer's Plant Community Ecology Lab, I gained field work experience by collecting and sterilizing live tissue samples of marsh plants for studies on plant-microbe symbioses. I aided in setting up a plant community mesocosm experiment in the departmental greenhouse; cultivation of collected plant samples; mixed and sterilized soil to the experiment’s specifications using an autoclave. The research conducted in lab would help inform community dynamics between marsh grasses and microbes to inform effective conservation strategies for marsh ecosystems. Show less

Working in Dr. Farrer’s Plant Community Ecology Lab I conducted field work by setting up experimental plots in Louisiana marsh ecosystems; designed experimental plots using cut PVC piping that was meticulously placed in the marsh to ensure accurate GPS coordinates; collected GPS coordinates to map experimental plots and establish data lines I also prepared sterile media for fungal cultures using a flow hood, followed protocols to culture endophytic fungi from root tissue samples in sterile conditions, and assigned operational taxonomic units (OTUs) to samples based on morphological characteristics.
