Colonial Urban Morphology in The Canary Islands: The Case Study of San Cristóbal de La Laguna ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The case study’s purpose is to understand change at both a city and architectural scale. Identification of a Castilian Colonial’s cultural heritage and architectural style on dynamic natural landscapes towards its urban city development are recognized for further protection in the discourse of conservation. Urban morphology traces urban form at a spatial and temporal level. The urban form can therefore be recorded to show a city’s temporal change between phases of growth and shrinkage or compactness and sprawl; potentially densifying the city’s footprint or expanding from its historical core. Documenting the spatial and temporal evolution of Spanish cities’ design and land values supports the conservation of Castilian urban morphology. Extensive research and preparation of historic and planning reports were performed along with statistical compilation, and graphic presentation of various phases of the historic and existing planning program, including population, social/economic/architectural characteristics, commercial and industrial trends, housing, tourism, building types and uses, public improvements, public facilities and parks, recreational and cultural facilities. A Cooperative Market for Agriculture, Architecture for Small-Scale Agriculture in Chile ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A cooperative market influenced by the hacienda typology thesis project appropriately responds to Chile’s regionally diverse agricultural lands. Located in La Calera, the market’s proximity to small-scale farms, highway infrastructure and port facilities would ensure the success of small-scale farms’ production and growth against mass mono-cultured corporate farms. The cooperative market would act as a vehicle for the procurement, distribution and tourism connected to agricultural products. Its holistic design tests the claim that architecture informed by local building, farming and urban practices can offer a prototypical approach that will better empower the community involved in the production of agricultural products to be consumed at a global scale.
