Built an Excel model representative of a typical insurer's business made up of premiums, expenses, losses and reinsurance covers. Master's thesis investigating risk measures: When optimising reinsurance strategies, Value at Risk is at the base of most decision making frameworks. VaR has been criticised in the research world for not being coherent. Consequently, the thesis reviews VaR and investigates the following alternative coherent measures of risk: - Expected Shortfall (ES), Tail-Value at Risk (TVaR), Tail Conditional Expectation (TCE) - Wang Transform (WT) - Proportional Hazard transform (PH) - Dual Power transform (DP) (I finished top of the class with a High Distinction grade)

Large Loss Parameterisation for Capital Modelling in Igloo: I adjusted the development patterns with Chain ladder and fitted the appropriate distributions to the data. Outputs: mean and CoV of the frequency, severity and aggregate fitted distributions. Data Inputs for the Large Loss Model: I commented, improved and updated 800 lines of code in VBA and Access queries which were extracting above threshold claims. The process included: importing the raw data, updating the rate of exchange adjustment, inflating the cumulation of outstanding and quarterly inflated paid, and preparing the data to import in Igloo. Tasks in Excel: Reconciling claims reserves, deriving earning patterns, building reinsurance schematics, studying major issues classication / development patterns.

Preparing data for analysis in Access: Built Excel dynamic pivot tables containing claims and reserves indicators as well as descriptive data on product sales and new policy holder profiles. Overall the process consisted of: 1. Extracting data with Brio Intelligence Explorer and then importing them in Access. 2. Creating Access queries (sometimes in SQL and VBA) that select, clean, and transform the relevant data. The process was automated via a macro to provide ready monthly updates. 3. Importing the nal Access table into Excel and creating the dynamic pivot table.
