I was serving in Botswana for the Peace Corps under the Life Skills sector, where I was assigned as a school and community liaison in the southern Kalahari Desert in a village called Draaihoek. My responsibilities at the school involved teaching English at the primary level, particularly seventh graders, academically assisting special needs students, facilitating gender-related after-school programs, and providing guidance counseling highlighting sex education. I also created and established an after-school mentoring program called Draaihoek Sisterhood between the unemployed female youths and the orphans in my host village. Besides being a faculty member at the school, I was also communicating with the young adults in my village to collaborate with future youth programs for the community using the Participatory Analysis for Community Action (PACA). Prior to being assigned down in the Kalahari, I had completed a 10- week intensive cultural-crossed training in Molepolole where I completed over 140 hours of learning the Setswana language (writing and speaking) and over 100 hours of technical training emphasizing on HIV/ AIDS prevention and education.
