During my stay as an intern at Mazingira Limited, there were roles that I can confidently highlight as the basis of the operations I was involved in: -Being part of Environmental Audits,Environmental Impact Assessments reports and Occupational Health and Safety Audits where the company has been mandated to do so. -Being part of the team that ensures issues that National Environment Management Authority would need improvement on, are taken into serious consideration. -Creating environmental awareness among the company’s staff and community locals through public meetings. -Development of mitigation measures in order to curb and or minimize the negative impacts that would be associated to a particular project where Mazingira Limited has been given the mandate to carry out Environmental Impact Assessments. -Empowering the public, providing them with the knowledge and understanding that enables them to create a sense of ownership and responsibility over the project. -Establish effective communication procedure between management, project proponent and the affected community at large or rather where the project is to be set up. -Evaluation of potential environmental impacts associated to a project. -Giving the public an opportunity to raise concerns and influence the decision making processes involved in either Environmental Impact Assessments and Environmental Audits. -Holding stakeholder meetings and public consultations with community members while on field assignments. -Liaising with relevant statutory authorities and meeting the set national and international environmental standards that are in line with the sector that the organization runs within. -Making it known to the public how decisions are made and on what basis, and how much the public’s input is important in the whole process. -Review of project reports that have already been prepared by the company. -Scoping and development of project terms of references. I was able to get invaluable knowledge on development matters vis a vis environmental protection and preservation. It was an honor to work under really great professionals and the experience was humbling. FUNCTIONS • Establish a schedule of environmental audit and monitoring for each calendar year for all KETRACO projects. • Conduct Environmental and Social Management Plan Monitoring for all projects under construction at least once in every three months. • Identify non-conformities with Environmental Management and Coordination Act 1999 and other international best practices and make recommendations to the management. • Ensure KETRACO implements and maintains an environmental management system. • Compile statistics of environmental concerns in all KETRACO projects as primary data for providing remedial measures, plan and allocation of resources. • Investigate project affected persons[PAPs] complaints on environmental issues. • Advise on appropriate mitigation measures of all environmental concerns identified in all KETRACO projects. • Ensure that Environmental and Social Impact Assessment [E.S.I.A] reports and licenses are availed to the contractors. • Ensure that NEMA’s improvement orders are complied with as and when they are availed. • Establish effective and honest communication between the Management,Contractors and the Project Affected Persons. • Ensure compliance with donor conditionality. • Create environmental awareness among KETRACO staff and even among the Project Affected Persons[PAPs]. This is done through public meetings/barazas and through distribution of environmental brochures. Show less
