During the busy period of Christmas, I stepped up to be a reserve assistant manager which meant that when cover was needed I would take on the duties of the assistant manager – this primarily entailed doing cash up and locking up as well as ensuring everything runs smoothly, in my day to day duties I was responsible for opening up the hotel in the morning, checking the bills and taking payments, I aided my team by running the restaurant so that the management team could deal with the paperwork that accompanies Christmas. In the restaurant I would run the pass so that service was smooth this involved monitoring when the waiting team took and put through orders so the kitchen wouldn’t become backed up. This took time management skills to ensure that no one was waiting too long. I had to deal with complaints in an appropriate manor and response, my job required me to handle party bookings and was very customer facing during Christmas I would be putting through pre-orders and ensuring the guests events ran smoothly, this involved accommodating any special requirements and requests. For New Year’s Eve I designed and printed the tickets and dealt with issuing them to the customers and taking the payments. Seeing the events come together over Christmas and knowing you played a vital part in making someone’s event perfect is a really rewarding and energising feeling that I hope can continue throughout my career.

Assistant Studio Manager
-
Apr 2019 - Aug 2019
After my Internship at Smith & Gilmour ended, they recommended me for a short 4-month Illness relief contract to be the Assistant Studio Manager at Factory Studios. My role here was to take the bookings for the studios, accept the prop and ingredient deliveries and make sure the studios where ready and clean for the next client, part of my role was advising the client on which studio suited their needs the best and deal with any requests they had. Dealing with clients such as Waitrose and the Great British Bake Off I had to ensure that confidentiality was key as most products hadn’t been launched or as with The Great British Bake off the series hadn’t been aired and any spoilers may have been detrimental. My role involved organising lunch and transport for clients and just generally making sure that they were having a good experience and had everything they needed.

Feb 2019 - Apr 2019
Smith & Gilmour is an independent design company with offices in London and West Berkshire. Established for over twenty years, they are structured to provide effective solutions within all aspects of graphic design, specialising on graphics for books working with clients such as Rick Stein, Little Mix, Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.Whilst working at Smith & Gilmour as a junior designer I undertook many duties, my role primarily was comprised of tasks such as creating social media content for a local gastro bakery – it was key that this work was completed to timeline and to a very high standard to help maintain a great pre-existing relationship with this client, as well as working on larger projects such as The Curry Guy and Matt Pritchard’s: Dirty Vegan Another Bite, my work on this was mainly researching and sourcing images to be used in the final design then working alongside a senior designer to artwork a draft to send to the client. My role also included working on shoot alongside an Art Director, there my role was to aid the photographer in the production to create the best outcomes whilst keeping the clients vision in mind – this involved going onto location, helping in selecting props and backgrounds, ensuring we had photographed all shots needed, printing the previews and laying them in order to be reviewed by the Art Director.

Working with the large team at Bel and The Dragon has taught me hands on people skills, and as it is also a hotel it has opened opportunities for me to learn and grow as a working professional, doing housekeeping gives me a respect for the whole industry, it has meant that I have been able to push for training on sectors such as reception which involves taking phone calls, dealing with room bookings and special requests. My role also includes problem solving on a regular basis and taking large payments. While working in a restaurant I have learnt how to read people and judge the best way to up-sell, push items appropriately and always anticipate customers’ needs. I learnt how important great service is and I have seen first-hand how it can completely shape the experience.

During my time at FCB Inferno, I became a member of the team and worked on many accounts such as UEFA Champions League, Huawei and BMW. My role included creating competitor decks that analysed how rival brands were tackling their markets and how they use social media to increase their market presence amongst a younger demographic – I had to identify what FCB’s Clients could learn from their competitors and implement/adapt themselves. I learnt to work to deadlines and got to grips with a real work environment amongst working professionals.
