As Web producer for Taloussanomat, the first major European daily newspaper to discontinue its print edition and go Web-only, I conceptualized, designed (UI, HTML/CSS, Javascript) and developed (PHP, MySQL) new features for the paper's three different news brands: taloussanomat.fi, itviikko.fi and digitoday.fi. My other responsibilities included the day-to-day aspects of running a large Web site and other ongoing development efforts, such as improving application performance and search engine optimization. The position also involved editorial and advertising work, such as the planning and implementation of interactive editorial features and creating unique advertising products for customers. As a Web-only newspaper, our strategy was to utilize the latest Web technologies to grow readership and improve the user experience of the publications. We experimented with and adopted rich user interfaces (Ajax), social media, microformats, and diverse delivery channels, such as fully-featured mobile sites, personalized news tracking services (email and SMS alerts), various types of embeddable or desktop gadgets, and a comprehensive range of feeds. Through two complete overhauls of the site (2006 and 2008), Taloussanomat's unique weekly visitors grew from 50 000 to over 600 000 readers. During this time, Taloussanomat won a half dozen awards and short-listings, and was the first newspaper in the world to license all of its own editorial content under a Creative Commons license.
