Ilana Landsberg-Lewis co-founded and led The Stephen Lewis Foundation – an international charity established to raise funds and deliver them directly into the hands of community-based organizations at the frontlines of the AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular lens on grassroots activists, women, girls and LGBTIQ advocates. As the Foundation’s inaugural Executive Director, Ilana worked with superlative colleagues to build the organization into a globally respected charity, inspired and guided by the insights and expertise of community-based organization partners in sub-Saharan Africa, with a commitment to work with values rooted in feminism and anti-colonial imperatives. During her tenure, the SLF raised and disbursed over $130 million dollars, supporting 1800+ initiatives with over 300 CBOs in the 15 countries hardest hit by the pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa. The SLF initiated programmes to amplify the voices and expertise of grassroots leaders on HIV and AIDS in Africa, from the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign (a solidarity Campaign of 10,000+ grandmothers in Canada, Australia and the U.K over the course of a decade. – which raised over $35 million of support that went directly to organizations run by and for hundreds of thousands of indomitable grandmothers leading the response to AIDS at the community level in Africa), to the LGBTIQ Africa Initiative, supporting courageous grassroots activist organizations working on HIV and securing the human rights of its members. I spent nine years at the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), working to advance women's human rights, working with outstanding colleagues at HQ and in Regional Offices. Many tremendous initiatives and opportunities to contribute to the struggle for gender equality and women's human rights, including assisting with the successful diplomatic negotiations that led to the creation of the U.N. Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, and innovating and launching UNIFEM’s work on CEDAW (the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women), becoming UNIFEM’s first global CEDAW Advisor. While at the United Nations, I co-founded the first advocacy organization for the rights of LGBTQ U.N. employees – UNGLOBE - and served as its first President, to establish UNGLOBE as an organization with official status at the U.N.
