  With the pleasure of working alongside Dr. Viviana Perez, my objective is to identify whether long-lived little brown bat cells will be more resistant to accumulate protein aggregates than short-lived TADA cells. We predict that little brown bat (LBB) will have a lower concentration of protein aggregates due to an increased proteostasis. If our hypothesis is true, then our understanding of protein aggregation with age will change, indicating that proteostasis is an essential mechanism for controlling protein aggregation in long- lived species, which would have a direct impact on human aging.   Peer Mentors are upper division students at OSU that have experience doing undergraduate research in STEM fields. As a peer mentor, I am responsible for being a guide in helping first year university students make the transition to a higher education. I am aware of challenges that the mentees might be facing in their first year at OSU. This allows me to help mentees get through difficult experiences and lead them on a path that will result not only in their success, but in their excelling. Peer mentors are role models who can develop relationships with mentees that will help foster trust and lead to better ways of dealing with problems. Lastly, advice coming from peer mentors is likely to be heard differently by mentees than coming from program non-student staff, leading to more effective communications. Show less
