I have tutored students for over 5 years for the 11+, Science and Maths, but decided to expand the idea of one-to-one student tutoring into a profitable business. This involved recruiting and training other students to help meet the increasing demand for affordable but professional tuition, gaining the rewards of teaching but the skills of team leadership. Currently, I manage a team of around 30 students ranging from Year 11 to undergraduates attending universities including Oxford and Cambridge. Since setting up this business, I have had to administrate finances, liaise with clients regularly to schedule lessons and advertise our services through various platforms, refining processes within the business to take on more tutors, more students and run more courses over time. From the various experiences I gained as a reporter, photographer and salesman in the team, I eventually applied for and earned a promotion as the business manager. Since the annual end of year review is printed, we are requried to raise £6000 in order to distribute copies to students, teachers and parents free of charge as a commemoration of the past school year. I am currently responsible for ensuring we meet this target, tracking finances we have raised from the tuck shop to make predictions of our yearly profits, and implementing new financial strategies so we comfortably reach the target. As well as this, I am responsible for creating a business plan to summarise the financial processes in the committee, to submit for the Shine School Media Awards. Show less

Involved in reporting about various topical issues and school events for the school magazine - The Word. The rigorous application process involved providing a CV, attending a formal interview and a 6-week training programme, to ensure the quality of articles remained at a high standard. After my first year in the team, I often helped at interviews to recruit other members and took on mentorship roles frequently to train others as they started in the commitee. Writing the articles involved frequent communication with teachers to write the reports and then using Adobe InDesign to format articles in a specific style. I occasionally took part in photography opportunities around school, taking pictures at events to use alongside articles, and learning to manipulate software such as PhotoShop.Alongisde typical reporting duties, this role involved each member raising funds for the final printed magazine, a total of £6000 a year. This was achieved through the designated tuck shop which members had to sell from each lunchtime, and for 3 consecutive years I raised the greatest amount as top salesman. Show less

The JLR work experience involved an array of activities and presentations from various employees within the company. We were also given a task to develop an improvement across the Jaguar and Land Rover car ranges in teams and present our research back to the whole cohort. During this time I led my team to develop a new and simplified infotainment system, rethinking JLR's approach to luxury and design. We were also given an in-depth tour of the Gaydon centre, from the teardown department, the software engineering side and how individual parts of the car were thoroughly tested or developed. Along the tour we met various employees who gave interactive perspectives of their work and the journey of their engineering careers. Over the duration of this experience, I gained insightful knowledge into the various routes to enter a career at JLR, especially the various requirements and opportunities offered by apprenticeships. It also allowed me to learn presentation and team building skills, to communicate our team's innovation clearly to the group. As well as this, it exposed me to the various career paths within JLR and positively changed my outlook on a career in engineering. Show less
