The Learnovate Centre is an Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland funded, industry-led centre of excellence for innovation and research in technology-enhanced learning. The mission of the centre is to enhance the competitive advantage of the Irish eLearning industry by partnering industry with leading academic research groups. The focus of the centre is on the application and transfer of breakthrough technology into measurable learning innovation. The centre's goal is to be a globally recognised, industry-led centre of excellence in applied learning technology research and innovation. As a Technology Lead my role involves working closely with the innovation, learning science and user experience teams to create new and innovative edTech solutions that have the potential to provide significant commercial advantages to our industry partners. My work covers the entire life-cycle of a solution including conceptualisation and market research, software design and architecture as well as providing leadership for a team of software engineers during the development process. The role of Technology Lead is also a very hands-on one in which I actively contribute to the development of the solutions that the team are creating as well as helping to configure and maintain the server infrastructure. I am also heavily involved in the real world trial and evaluation of the developed solutions.Another facet of my role is to work with our industry partners on a consultancy basis to help them maximise the effectiveness of their products and services. This can take many forms including supporting their product development as a 'trusted advisor', deliver bespoke research on the application of specific technologies and techniques such as personalisation and machine learning. I also lead the design/development of technology prototypes that inform and address their specific needs.

Research Assistant

Jan 2008 - Mar 2013
My role was to design and develop innovate demonstrator systems that brought together and showcased the research software being created as part of the ongoing research in the area of intelligent content (digital content management). These demonstrators were designed to be a public showcase of the technology, bringing together expertise from across the research centre (machine translation, speech recognition, intelligent content, etc.) to illustrate the types of innovative applications that these new technologies could support. This role involved working closely with dynamic teams from across the different academic research partners in order to create integrated solutions.
