Even though I have worked with Ian since I started working at IBM, I still continue to learn things from Ian to this day. He always has time to answer any technical questions and is always eager to transfer skills. In this way, Ian helps the careers of others around him. Some of my more recent side projects include consulting advice from him!

Jeff Luo

Coming from the same university as Ian, he was a great source of inspiration and knowledge during my coop/internship. Ian often gave great advice to peers and coop students alike. No doubt exceptional in his field and role, Ian comes packed with a great sense of humor and is always ready brighten someone's day. It was a pleasure to work with you!

    • Senior Manager of Quality Assurance - IBM PureApplication Systems
      • Oct 2015 - Oct 2016

Currently responsible for a team of 15 System Testers and the system testing strategy and design. Test automation and persona based tests are key to this strategy to enable key customer scenarios to remain of high quality while we execute in an agile sprint based development cycle. In the management position I have created a Product Owner role in addition to my normal duties, where my key job is to support the team and maintaining the value ordered priority of the my squads work. I also ensure I understand the stakeholders needs communicate our ordering and progress clearly to up line management allowing for clear and simplified decisions on the inclusion of new features into the next delivery. In Feb 2016, I joining the IBM Agile Academy as an Agile Champion and continued to lead the transformation of the Pure Application team from waterfall into agile "spotify'ish" development process. This includes ideas like tracking simple metrics on squad "feeling" and "productivity / velocity" Show less

    • System Test Architect - IBM PureApplication Systems
      • Feb 2013 - Oct 2015

System Test Architect for the IBM PureApplication Systems product. Also the architect for the test automation team driving a more agile methodology across the team. In my time in this position I have lead the transition from a waterfall development model into an agile sprint based development cycle. Our delivery times have shifted from once a year to 4 times a year while maintaining quality, but allowing us to rapidly adjust to the markets demands. • Advisory Software Developer - Test Architect - Tivoli Provisioning Manager
      • Oct 2005 - Feb 2013

I joining the Tivoli Provisioning Manager team as a band 6 and then later leaving the team to join the Pure Application System team as a band 9 test architect. In my time on the Tivoli team, I championed the System Test Squad, growing the teams reputation as competent and educated professionals. I later lead an effort to drive the team to generate over 90% of our testing into automated tests. This was part of the larger development team shift into agile development cycles from a waterfall process. This plan involved adding one or more system test personal to each squads to allow them to create and execute the automated system tests while the squad designed and built the code. I also began the transition from "gut feeling" status on the teams ability to ship code into some metric driven decisions. These metrics included orthogonal defect classification along with clear defect trends and story (tests) execution trends and burn down curves. Show less

    • Test Technical Lead - DB2 Regression Testing
      • Jun 2000 - Oct 2005

I joining IBM directly from University as part of the DB2 Automated Regression team. In my time with the db2 automation team I was responsible for running and investigating failures in the automation code. I also took on ownership of the automated tool sets, keeping them current with each new compiler and operating system as db2 added support for them. After a few years, the team began to work on a new set of services that would allow the team to execute 10 times the automation in the same time frame. It also allowed the teams to debug and rerun testcases at a high efficacy, allowing for more defects and in the end a more stable product. My role in this was to design the database schema, and build most of the web interfaces. This included automated charts and tools for automatic failure investigation. Show less
