Kristian Bodolai

Ian worked with us on an exciting research project at the intersection of remote sensing, machine learning and ecology. He worked at a very fast pace, creating data pipelines to obtain and analyze high resolution satellite imagery to segment individual trees, and implemented a novel annotation method for individual crown segmentation, demonstrating his coding skill by writing high quality and well documented software. He also had to quickly learn a lot of new concepts in ecology and remote sensing, and in a couple of weeks he was completely up to speed, and working on the state of the art. Ian also demonstrated excellent communication skills, engaging with our partners at University of Edinburgh and the Royal Botanical Gardens to include as much ecological knowledge as possible and improve the statistical modelling. By the end of his internship, he was the main point of contact between us and the rest of the project partners. In addition to this, Ian also demonstrated a great disposition for working and excellent problem solving skills. He also was an excellent fit for our team, providing a fun and positive working environment. To summarise, Ian is an excellent upcoming data scientist with a great approach to problem solving, with both excellent technical and interpersonal abilities.

      - Leading a new team of ~10 people to build an autonomous unfolding drone that deploys from our competition rocket at 30,000 feet in the air, take photos of the ground below, and stitch the images together in a georeferenced raster- Recruiting for a new sub team, retaining members, delegating research, design, and software tasks- Using ArduPilot, Rasterio, OpenCV, and Python for the rocket autopilot- Wiring Raspberry Pi, Pixhawk, and auxiliary hardware

      - Prototyped and tested the team's auto-recovery system, using a paraglider to land our rockets in a desired location, avoiding the wind-caused drift upon descent caused by traditional parachutes- Wrote code for the Arduino and Raspberry Pi to interpolate rocket position and rotation relative to the ground using IMU sensor input- Planned the auto-recovery system electrical and mechanical layout, collaborating with aerodynamics teams to integrate the plan with the rest of our rockets
