My dissertation, "Roots and branches: ancestry and environment in early modern China," is on environmental management and social change in 15th to 17th century south China. I have conducted research in Shanghai and Jiangxi Province archives and in the field, summer 2011 and September 2013 to present. I track the emergence of family institutions to preserve forest environments around tombs, and the beginnings of demographic trends that pose challenges to these institutions. This project employs a number of digital techniques - including topic modeling, GIS, regression and social network analysis - as well as close reading of historical documents. Show less
