Iain is a rare combination of an 'ideas person' and a 'person of action'. Able to think complex problems through to practical conclusions, Iain is an inspiring colleague. Not only is he on the top of his game, he makes you want to be on the top of yours. Insightful, witty, and down to earth, Iain gets things done, and done right.

Iain was one of the brightest, most stimulating colleagues I worked with in my time at Accenture. He is a truly exceptional strategic thinker. His energy and determination also make him impressively effective. As a teamworker, his personal generosity and inclusive, friendly approach make him a joy to collaborate with. Look no further for a brilliant and valuable advisor!

Experience

    • Chief Executive Officer
      • Aug 2002 - Present

My own small firm providing consulting and investment services in tech startups, research ventures, and new-business launch. My recent focus has been on 'project' work, often linked to the creation of new startups in FinTech (ThirdWave), renewable energy (Bell Blade), and aerodynamics (Ptero). Consulting clients have included NASA, Intel, BAE Systems, Qinetiq, MV Agusta Motorcycles, Deutsche Bank, Accenture, the FAA, and the US Department of Defense. Further back. Work here also includes several engagement as C-level interim executive.

Youngest ever CEO in European venture capital (ref: Libraries House). An interim posting to set-up and run a new venture capital firm. Focused on seed and early-stage capital investments, I oversaw the offshore fund structure (>$100M) and an annual operating budget (~$10M) creating an investment pipeline designed to achieve public listing in excess of $300M within three years. The firm was named "Investment partner of choice” by the UK Ministry of Defence and we closed collaboration deals with UK government labs, Oxford, Cambridge and other leading universities.

After a learning period in telecoms I took the initiative to reinvent Accenture’s approach to the UK Aerospace & Defense market. I am credited with taking them, more or less single handedly, from a single $50K per year project into what is now a >$500M pa business. Key to this growth: in my last year at the firm I single-handedly opened and then helped to negotiate and win what was at the time Accenture’s second largest IT outsource contract in Europe ($0.5 Billion). Offered a position as ‘Director, UK Aerospace & Defense’ I left to form Insight SRI instead.

    • Head of Internet (interim division COO)
      • Jan 2001 - Sep 2001

An interim operations position as 'Head of Internet' for cable-TV firm NTL, the #2 UK operator with 15,000 employees and $3.4Bn in revenue. Work included migration of 600K customers from free to paid dial-up internet, and assisting in the launch of the world’s first broadband internet service through the cable TV box (rather than using a separate modem). Assignment via Accenture. NTL (now Virgin Media) is the UK equivalent of Comcast.
