As Senior Learning & Data Scientist my role touched on 3 broad areas: Design & Development - Built an online learning algorithm to measure and adjust for every item’s difficulty and every user’s ability, and substantially improve the accuracy of our learning engine. - Combined Cerego’s rich data with this improved accuracy to measure effects of behavior and presentation order on learning; insights now embedded in the user experience. - Identified and measured significant… Show more As Senior Learning & Data Scientist my role touched on 3 broad areas: Design & Development - Built an online learning algorithm to measure and adjust for every item’s difficulty and every user’s ability, and substantially improve the accuracy of our learning engine. - Combined Cerego’s rich data with this improved accuracy to measure effects of behavior and presentation order on learning; insights now embedded in the user experience. - Identified and measured significant advantages to learning on mobile; worked with engineering, marketing and product management to increase mobile adoption among our top 10 partners by 96% in 4 months. Research - Directed Cerego’s research for the Bill & Melinda Gates’ funded Next Generation Courseware Challenge, involving co-ordination with 3 outside groups. The ongoing formal impact study involves 1000s of students across multiple sites, aimed at measuring the effectiveness of adaptive learning in US colleges with a focus on improving outcomes for low-income students. - Managed research collaboration with the University of Toronto; co-authored pre-registered, peer-reviewed research into ego depletion and fatigue. - Formed new collaborations with institutions such as Dartmouth College and UC Dublin, using Cerego’s data to support further novel peer-reviewed research. Strategic Vision - Authored Cerego’s White Paper (cerego.com/whitepaper) explaining the science we use, the research that backs it, and why we implement it the way we do. - Presented ongoing research to build enthusiasm and support; co-founded an internal learning science reading club to strengthen institutional understanding of the science behind the product. - Built a prototype NLP-based tool to generate Cerego content from unstructured text, to demonstrate the potential value to the team, investors and outside parties. - Alongside the CEO & COO, defined Cerego’s scientific strategy and laid the platform to build a world-class learning and data science team.

An intensive 8 week fellowship training and placing advanced-degree data scientists and quants. Fantastic exposure to big data techniques and the industry, free for fellows, and very selective/competitive as a result (~2% acceptance rate). If you're considering moving into data science or data engineering, I'd be happy to talk about my experiences and offer what advice I can about negotiating the application and selection process!
