Iain has an exceptional committment to line management. His wealth of technical knowledge was instantly beneficial to my own skills set, and he combined this with strong leadership in all areas of best practice. I recommend him on the grounds that he would have a positive impact on anyone working around him, both in technical skill and as a creator of an enjoyable working environment.

Towards the end of 2013, having started a family, I was seeking a better work/life balance. So I decided to move into working as an independent contractor/consultant. Organisations I worked with:Yorkshire Water plc. I led a team developing a risk identification and quantification tool, as well as Power BI dashboards that displayed predicted current/future probability of risk event occurrence. Previously I'd been helping them get their data in shape for migration from SAP ECC6 to S/4 Hana. (12 months, 2 extensions)CAP-HPI Ltd. Working with SQL Server 2014 and SSIS/SSDT, I delivered substantial improvements to the performance and quality of their existing code base. I also planned, developed and implemented new code and processes.(9 months, 1 extension)Npower plc. Primarily I was responsible for running and enhancing an existing data processing solution developed in MS Access, but I was also supporting an EDW development project using SAP BW / Business Objects. (10 months, 2 extensions)Univar plc. Designed and built a Data Warehouse for use across the EMEA region, using SQL Server 2014, SSDT and custom C# components. This project encompassed the design and build of a bespoke DW architecture, including custom ETL, process automation and data management functionality. The DW was used to feed a Tableau server providing self-service reporting to 1000+ users. It also involved the initial migration of existing MS Access based report data processing to this new environment, as well as ongoing integration of data from a range of different sources, including SFDC, SAP and various other ERP systems.(2 years, 7 extensions)Lloyds Banking Group. Developed new data feeds for an SQL Server Data Warehouse, a data validation framework, a bespoke data transfer tool and a bespoke database release management tool, both using winforms and vb.net. In this role, I took overall responsibility for the safe custody and effective management of the Party's considerable data assets. This involved:Overall responsibility for database development and data management.Planning and delivering projects for integration of large scale data transfers.Planning the data migration for a new application launch.Primary DBA responsibility for a 6 server estate, running SQL Server 2005. This included managing a heavily replicated live application database (350+ subscribers, all merge replicated) and a 600Gb master data store. All of this was undertaken in an extremely constrained environment, with main servers permanently running at very high cpu and disk utilisation and very limited test facilities. In addition to my custodial responsibilities, I also built, trained and managed a team of 5 staff from a standing start.Key achievements:Delivery of significant performance improvements to replication system, increasing throughput from ~150 site synchronisations/day to 450+.Delivery of increased processing performance and reliability through the targeted application of SQL code / indexing strategy reviews and exception handling routines. Delivery of new, high volume data integration processes for a number of data sources.

In this role I worked with a wide range of clients, producing solutions to some very challenging data problems through the use of the SQL Server product stack and MS Access / VBA.Some of the projects that I worked on:Worked with a tier 1 investment bank to identify and fix issues with their position reporting process.Led data workstream of a JD Edwards ERP implementation project for a major European drinks manufacturer. Designed and built a SQL Server metadata driven SSIS migration engine to manage the integration of data from 52 separate source systems.Designed a SQL Server model to allow a big four UK bank to estimate its potential group liability to refunds of bank charges. Managed a small team to build and implement the model using a combination of SSIS ETL packages and stored procedures.Designed, built and implemented a SQL Server / MS Access application to manage donation compliance returns to the Electoral Commission for a UK political party.Designed and built a full text search engine used to analyse significant volumes of SWIFT messages for the purposes of a financial crime investigation. Designed and built an MS Access application for a healthcare provider to integrate finance data from a number of sources into a single reporting data store. The application included a bespoke user-customisable reporting layer that offered the client tremendous flexibility in the production of reports and analyses. In addition to my delivery responsibilities, I was a recognised SQL Server subject matter expert, considered the go-to person for SQL Server advice within the team. In order to help develop skills across the team, I created and delivered several SQL Server training courses.
