Part of a small team designing and developing electronics hardware for automotive radar sensors, providing a vehicle with park distance, adaptive cruise control, collision warning, etc. The sensor would also become part of wider ADAS system involving other sensors and cameras on a vehicle. My work involved designing blocks of electronics within the sensor, involving a mix of analogue, digital, interfacing, and protection elements. I was also involved in the initial hardware testing of prototype samples and designed an evaluation board to make testing and investigative work easier. This work also involved analysis and reporting tasks for internal project gates, standards compliance, requirements capture with DOORS, and external customer auditing. Show less

As an Electrical Systems Engineer, I was part of a small team responsible for ensuring connectivity & integration of electronic & electrical components within high value limited edition vehicles. This involved liaising with different JLR Core product engineers to ensure connectivity between electronic/electrical modules, oversee the development of new modules by external suppliers and act as champion for deep-dive design reviews too ensure the robustness and quality of new designs. Additionally, I was responsible for developing schedules for prototype vehicle electrical testing & to co-ordinate support of module engineering teams. Show less

    • Electronics Engineer
      • Jan 2008 - May 2016

From 2010, I was working on new product introduction for engine control applications. This involved the design of electronics for safety critical applications, and design for reliability, which involved learning new skills in stress analysis, reliability predictions and FMEA. And of course, the qualification and certification work that results from projects like this are all tasks I was heavily involved in whether it was internal gateway reviews, customer reviews, or declarations of compliance and performance to the customer or to regulatory bodies. Up to 2010, my role at Controls & Data Services was as an Electronics Engineer working on In-Service projects. This meant that I worked on products already in production and on products returned from aircraft. This role was to ensure that anything that may cause problems for Production, or worse an aircraft, is identified, analysed, contained and resolved in a timely manner. As all the products were classed as safety critical, the documentation surrounding any change was also part of my role. Show less

During a period of real disillusionment with engineering, coinciding with a poor job market, I decided to begin my own business in a different area. With some research, I settled on the courier industry and ICC Courier was born. It was a courier business operating in the same day market covering the UK and Western Europe. Most business was as a sub-contractor to other courier companies on a job by job basis. But an increasing portion of the business concerned end-users as well. Skills developed included business planning and implementation, daily management, taxation and VAT, credit control, price setting, book-keeping, customer relations, sales and marketing. The business proved to be successful with a reputation for reliability, dependability and trustworthiness that provided a fantastic advert by word of mouth. The birth of my daughter meant I no longer wished to work the often long and unsocial hours required and so I closed the company in January 2007. Show less

    • Electronics Engineer
      • Feb 2002 - Jan 2005

GE Druck (now GE Sensing) produce highly accurate pressure sensors and transducres to a wide variety of industries. My role as an electronics engineer was to design and develop pressure sensors and to support Production. This role not only included electronic design, but also analysis of production failures to reclaim sensors thought to be unusable, and to use the results to instigate process improvements with the obvious benefit on yield. In one case, I used my investigations to highlight improvements that lead to the increase in yield of a higher volume product from 50% first time pass to over 90%. Show less
