One of the socially most crippling impediments in old age is the impairment in communication. These impairments occur not only on the sensory level; much of it is due to the diminished ability to process the fast information stream in the auditory channel. In young participants degraded auditory information transmission during communication can be compensated by taking advantage of lip and face movements during speaking (this audio-visual integration (AVI) may compensate a loss of up to 10 dB/spl). In the elderly visual enhancement of auditoryinformation may be even more important, because of hearing impairment at peripheral level and at central levels; in the case of beginning cognitive impairments there may be also semantic impairments which could increase the importance of multimodal sensory information in language processing. My tasks consist of:- Experiment design to investigate the effects of AVI of semantic processing- EEG data collection and analysis in MATLAB, R, and Brain Vision Analyzer- Statistical data analysis
