I worked alongside Dr. Jason Duncan and other biology students on a large-scale mutagenic screen on the 3rd chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster targeting the Actin Depolymerizing factor (ADF) and cofilin ortholog slingshot. I prepared fly food, expanded Drosophila stocks, set up genetic crosses, and analyzed progeny for desired traits. During my shifts at Hope Orthopedics I worked alongside medical providers to ensure satisfactory care to all patients. For each patient visit I was responsible for transcribing essential information, inputting surgery and injection orders, and submitting to billing. This was all done in the healthcare coding system, NextGen. During my shifts at Hope Orthopedics I worked alongside medical providers to ensure satisfactory care to all patients. While studying abroad in Spain, I interned at the Hospital HLA Inmaculada. During this four month program, I had the chance to interact and communicate with doctors and patients (all in Spanish). These conversations increased my understanding of basic healthcare provider responsibilities and gave me a different perspective on the healthcare system as a whole. I was also able to stand in on many surgical procedures - an opportunity that is not common for undergraduates in the United States.
