C4X Discovery is a Manchester-based company focused on optimising drug discovery and design. It was founded in 2008 as a spin-out from the University of Manchester. The company uses its NMR-based technology to solve the dynamic 3D structures of a broad range of biomolecules, including peptides, cofactors, oligonucleotides and carbohydrates. Since C4X Discovery's NMR technology shows what shapes active molecules prefer to adopt, it provides high-quality templates for drug discovery and design, and valuable information for drug candidate optimisation. In addition, the data is generated faster and more reliably than standard techniques such as X-ray co-crystallography or molecular modelling. C4X Discovery is using its technology in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry and to build its own proprietary pipeline of high-value therapeutic candidates. It has been funded since inception by life science investor Aquarius Equity Partners. www.c4xdiscovery.com

Carrying out ultra-fast Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (ssNMR) to investigate the utility of these methods to gain high resolution structural information on poorly expressing membrane protein systems. Carrying out recoupling measurements at moderate MAS speeds to determine bound ligand conformation in G-protein coupled receptor complexes.Other duties include writing papers, presenting of results at national and international conferences, and upkeep of the ssNMR facilities.

    • Postdoctoral Researcher
      • Sep 2012 - Dec 2013

Carrying out ultra-fast Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy on various protein samples to measure conformational dynamics and paramagnetic effects, and to relate these to folding, molecular recognition, and catalytic processes.Other duties included writing papers, presenting of results at conferences, undertaking experiments in Florence (Italy), supervision of masters and doctoral students, and teaching of undergraduates. Carrying out solution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to investigate the mechanism of enzymatic phosphate transfer, and relating experimental data from a wide range of NMR techniques to address themes such as substrate destabilisation, conformational entropy, and enzyme dynamics. Production of isotopically labelled protein samples for NMR study.Other duties included writing papers, presenting results at conferences, undertaking experiments in Lund (Sweden) and Utrecht (The Netherlands), demonstration of undergraduate laboratory sessions, supervision of undergraduate project students, supervision of new PhD students, and teaching NMR theory to other members of the group.

    • Founder & Chair of Postgraduate Café Forum
      • Jan 2010 - May 2011

Myself and another PhD student were responsible for setting up an initiative which allows a space for research postgraduates to give non-specialist talks to a lay audience, in the informal setting of a university-owned pub. By doing this the students gain both experience in presenting their work and insight into what work is carried out in laboratories/offices other than their own.The monthly events ran for the entire academic year and saw the presentation of 20 topics, ranging from the arts to pure sciences, to a typical audience of 50 people. Many of the speakers were enrolled on the Research Training Program module, and were therefore awarded credits as a result of their presentations.

    • President of Postgraduate Students Society
      • Apr 2010 - Apr 2011

I was elected as Postgraduate Society (PROGRESS) president for 2010-2011. PROGRESS is a university-wide society open to all postgrads. As president, I chaired meetings and was responsible for giving talks to prospective postgraduates as well as the incoming postgraduates in September 2010, of which there were 1300 in total.
