In 2004 I met Howard Kaye at a poker game. There were approximately 50 people in the room & seating was determined by which card (in the deck) you turned over when you entered to pay your entry fee. Pretty sure I pulled the 8 of clubs ... when I walked to the table I see that my seat is next to a guy who I recognize but I am not sure why or from where but I knew him for sure. Within 2 seconds of sitting down he introduced himself. When I heard his voice I realized I knew him from TV commercials and south Florida radio. It was Howard Kaye, the "Die Rich & Tax Free" life insurance guy. Together we sat and talked about life, business, played cards and had a great time. Howard was really different than the man I had seen on TV since moving to Boca Raton. A real-life teddy bear with a heart of gold and is as down-to-earth as anyone I had ever met. As we walked to the parking lot at the ned of the night Howard invited me to follow up with him anytime. I did not sleep at all that night. And the next morning I called to schedule a time to talk further. He asked me if I had ever met his Dad. The answer was no but was about to be yes. Looking back, that meeting was probably the biggest of my career (to that point). When I arrived I remember literally sweating through my shirt with nervousness. When the three of us got into the room I did not know what to say or how to begin even though I was prepared. So I said to Mr. Kaye (Howard's Dad) that I was very nervous because I felt like I knew him (from his books & seeing him on TV all the time) and in the industry he was famous in my mind. Mr. Kaye said; "relax young man. my son told me about you and we are not in any rush. You got into my office so let's make it productive." Several months later I subleased an office and entered the most productive financial services organization I had ever seen. Howard took me under his wing and allowed me access to his mind 24/7/365. The business and life lessons learned were beyond valuable. Today our friendship is still very special. Said differently, Howard is one of my "Redwoods" in life and I love the guy.
