In 2001, I become an independent agent for Trinity Packaging, my former company. My business, H Lewis Packaging, grew rapidly and I soon brought in Andrew Finkel as a full partner. A few years in, a customer who had moved to Ann Taylor reached out to ask if we could find sourcing for their paper bags, as their current supplier was unable to keep up with demand. Andy and I traveled the globe to identify and review qualified manufacturing facilities and began representing a domestic importer of high end paper packaging. In time, with rapid business growth, we decided we could best manage our customers’ expectations by importing direct from manufacturers ourselves. Thus, AnnJoy Imports (named after our wives) was born. Over the years, we have built a world-class staff of U.S. sales, sales service and logistics experts, and have further developed our international network of suppliers. We also established a satellite office in Asia where our employees are trained to conduct rigorous on-sight monitoring of our suppliers to ensure AnnJoy products meet or exceed all customer expectations. AnnJoy now supplies branded packaging to many of the largest and most prestigious retailers in the world. On a personal note, having begun my career in plastics, I feel a deep and increasing concern about the impact plastic packaging has had on our fragile environment. At AnnJoy we are dedicated to being good stewards of industry practice and to helping customers execute their visions for packaging in the most sustainable way possible.

I was hired by Trinity in 1981 - the largest producer of paper bags and sacks at that time - just as plastics began to explode onto the retail packaging space. My job was to run Trinity's plastics business nationally. Under my direction, the company sold to every major retailer in the U.S., and I became an officer and partner in the company. As sales increased, we were able to build a new factory in Pennsylvania and acquire a competitor's factory in Colorado. This allowed me to expand my product expertise to include knowledge of production machinery, factory operations, and personnel - a key distinguishing feature between me and other sales reps in the packaging industry. My position put me in the inside of planning and and managing sales, sales service, and manufacturing - providing insight I still rely upon today into how to integrate manufacturing scheduling with the needs of my customers.

National Sales Manager

1978 - 1981
From an entry level sales position at this large, point-of-purchase retail packaging business, I worked my way up to National Sales Manager in charge of sales and distribution in under three years. I attribute this early career success to superb product training combined with my hard work and persistence in identifying key accounts and building trusted relationships with customers.
