After teaching music and theatre at QAS for four years (2001-2005), I moved into part-time administration, acting as Middle School Dean of Students for three years (2005-2008). As Dean of Students, I handled most of the non-academic side of the Middle School: discipline, advisory system, chapel coordinator, general student counseling - while also continuing to teach two classes and serve as Fine Arts Department Chair. In the fall of 2008, I was appointed the Assistant Head of the whole school (the Middle and Upper School Divisions had been combined into one position), and became the Acting Head of School in February 2009 when the Head of School stepped down unexpectedly. I served as Acting Head of School from February 2009- June 2011, when the school closed. In my capacity as Assistant Head, I took on supervision of all faculty and curriculum, and in the role of Acting Head, added financial planning and oversight, long-range planning, and close work with the Board of Directors as we worked to save the school. All in all, a crash course in school leadership and working with faculty and staff under incredibly stressful situations, and while we ultimately lost the battle to save the school, I am incredibly grateful for the lessons I learned and the experience I gained in the process.
