I helped two graduate students and one professor with their ancient Swahili mitochondrial DNA research. During the spring of 2013 I did some of my own work using their data. I examined the mitochondrial DNA of modern Swahili people from the coast of Kenya. This involved DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, running the samples through acrylamide gels, sequencing the DNA, and analyzing it.
