Like any career, the library profession has its share of leaders. Some are good, some are bad, and then there are those that absolutely stand out as being superb in their field. Holly Paxson is one of those rare few. As the Branch Manager of the Queen Creek Library in Arizona, I watched her take a small one-room library and take it through the steps needed to transform it into a large branch. Beyond that, she displayed the leadership necessary to not only open a large branch library, but to do so under extraordinary conditions. She displayed the charisma, intelligence, and decision making abilities to juggle the demands of opening a new branch, dealing with an often buggy opening day collection, hiring and assigning a host of new staff members, and handling concerns from the town, library administration, and building contractors. In the years after the grand opening, she's always performed admirably both as a librarian and supervisor. She possess a technical acumen so important in the modern public library and she is always open to suggestion as to how to apply new trends and technologies to her branch's workflow. In the end, I cannot recommend her highly enough. She is an absolute star within the profession and a major asset to any library system employing her talents.
