  The current Capital Transit formerly known as Helena Area Transit Service (HATS) began public transit service in 1979. Prior to HATS, the service was called Dial-a-ride and was a privately operated transportation service for seniors. In 1999 the current fixed route loop service called checkpoint was established. This service operated on a counter-clockwise loop circling the city every hour to hour and a quarter. In October of 2014 a community based group of over fifty individuals representing citizens, government agencies, private businesses and health care organizations came together to brainstorm a new fixed route service providing transportation to more of the city than the current check point service provided. Quicker service point to point also was a key component. Attracting choice riders was an additional group the committee wished to attract to using public transportation. Capital Transit operation is Monday through Friday excluding weekends and federal holidays. We offer two fixed-route bus lines, an East Valley Deviated Fixed/ADA Complementary Paratransit Service bus, and a city wide ADA Complementary Paratransit Service bus.
