I was responsible for everything related to software. The design, the code, the build, the tests, everything. I also investigated potentially useful technologies, libraries, and frameworks. I then integrated anything that proved useful with the existing code base. I designed and implemented the application, both back end and front end, from scratch. The application was fully modularized and built using Maven. There is nothing like having to do everything yourself to reinforce the value of working in a team. Of course, working for a startup also meant I wore many hats so I did lots of other things too. My task at TELUS was to migrate data from a number of legacy systems into a new application and thus centralise it. This also helped improve performance and response time which, in turn, allowed TELUS to make changes to customer's accounts quicker when so requested by the customer. The problems faced were numerous. There were various systems, vendors, and teams to deal with but in the end the migration had to work properly or many TELUS customers would have a problem with their TELUS services. Keywords: Oracle (RDBMS), SQL Team: 4-7 (up to four offshore in India) During my last six months at TELUS, I improved software development by introducing Maven 2 and Continuous Integration to the group I was working with. I designed and implemented the foundation classes for Java reporting and sped up the deployment of reports by up to several days. I also substantially improved the performance (by 15-20%) of the three biggest reports. Keywords: Solaris, Java (J2SE), Informix (RDBMS), SQL, Maven 2, Continuous Integration, Korn Shell Team Size: ~30 (about half in India and the Philippines) Show less
