  As a reading specialist, I have helped my team develop a reading curriculum that is appropriate for struggling and reluctant leaders. I teach sections of reading classes to students who are placed in reading, and provide the necessary interventions and services these students need to be successful. In this role, I also teach sections of reading to EL students, and have modified the curriculum to better meet the needs of students who do not speak English as their first language. In my training as a reading specialist, I learned how to create effective professional development trainings for other teachers; and have helped teams of teachers incorporate essential literacy skills into their own classrooms. I am most proud of the relationships I have built with both students and staff members, as this has been vital to their growth in reading instruction and the development of lifelong literacy habits.   In this role I worked as a special education teacher for students in grades 9-12. I was a case manager for approximately 18 students each year, meaning I worked with a team of parents, educators, administrators, and the student to ensure that the student's needs were being met throughout the school year. I wrote an IEP for each student, creating obtainable goals for the student to meet each quarter of the year. I also worked with the students to develop their executive functioning skills, study habits, and communication skills. I also worked as a co teacher in this position. I ran a classroom with a content area teacher and ensured the curriculum being taught was meeting the needs of all students in the classroom. If it was not, I modified the content as needed, making sure all students had a chance for a successful learning environment. Show less
