During the years that I was at home with our children I ran a successful Parent and Toddler group. Responding to a need in the community in 1994 I established a parenting group which has been running weekly ever since, with around 30 people in attendance each week. I managed a team of 8 volunteers who helped run the group and care for pre-school children whilst the adults met separately for an hour each week. Subsequently I set up a monthly evening group for Parents of Teenagers. I developed material based on perceived and requested needs. Additionally, I have been involved in marriage preparation and guidance and grief and loss support. I have been a Governor at a large primary school from July 1999 – 2012, chairing the Personnel Committee and serving on the Head teacher’s Performance Management review group. I feel that taking a significant career break from paid employment enhanced my work place skills in terms of verbal communication, understanding the work life balance and meeting goals and targets in varied settings, particularly working with volunteers.
