I worked on a variety of projects and technologies at NewOrbit including large legacy systems, brownfield and greenfield projects as well as smaller internal business projects; working alone, or as part of a team and ultimately progressing to leading teams. I always strived to deliver high-quality maintainable code, minimising technical debt and providing good user experiences. My proudest achievement was leading a scrum team of four developers delivering the largest project the company had undertaken. I had to overcome a number of challenges: mentoring two junior team members, managing an incredibly large and ever-changing scope and adopting new technologies (EF Core, React, PWAs and Azure Search). Through working as a team with both my fellow developers and non-technical stakeholders we managed to deliver a quality product to a satisfied client.I gradually took on more responsibility throughout my time at the company - helping with the technical interviewing of new candidates, mentoring interns and juniors, running team meetings and delivering training back to my colleagues. I also took it upon myself to drive the company towards better code reuse, by encouraging the development of internal packages and microservices. Show less

Junior Web Application Developer

Sep 2014 - Mar 2015
I started out at NewOrbit as Junior Web Application Developer but immediately proved myself a capable developer through a variety of projects including updating all our applications to follow the security best practices at the time, and investigating and implementing Elasticsearch internally for logging.Through these two projects, I demonstrated my ability to work independently and take ownership of a project and was promoted to mid-level once my probation was complete.

Software Engineer

Sep 2013 - Sep 2014
I worked part-time for Copernicus Technology for just over a year. Working with technologies I had to learn on the job - VB.NET, Visual Studio, GIT and Arduino. During this time I went travelling around New Zealand but continued to work remotely with a team of two other developers. My biggest project with the company involved developing a .NET class library for communicating between PC software and one or many micro-controllers that has become integral to many of the company applications. I also created a small C++ library for the firmware end. I also helped the company to modernise some of its approaches to software development including adopting a stricter GitFlow process, encouraging more unit testing and by refactoring several areas of the codebase.
