Nexia Perth is a firm of action and our ‘delivering the promise’ mantra is simple: deliver on promises.A leading mid-tier accounting, financial services and consultancy organisation, we’re affiliated with Nexia International, the 9th largest global accounting network and home to some 667 offices, 245 member firms and total annual fee income of more than US$3.62 billion. If there’s one thing to know about Nexia Perth, it’s this: we’re committed to delivering freedom of choice and for clients, that’s what we deliver. We don’t partner from afar, we live the journey with you.In 2003, I arrived in Australia and took up a position with MGI Perth which ultimately, merged with Ord Nexia to create Nexia Perth. My initial introduction was as Audit Senior - Audit and Corporate Services however, a keen eye for detail, commitment to the team and strong results saw me rewarded with multiple promotions (Manager, Senior Client Manager) and my current position, Associate Director. During this time, I realised I had a passion and talent for corporate services specifically, delivering outsourced accounting services or effectively, acting as an organisation’s (de facto) Chief Financial Officer and/or Company Secretary.I specialise in tailoring compliance support to ASX listed companies, unlisted entities and Not-for-profit organisations. Further duties, skills and capabilities include (but are not limited to) preparation of governance documents and board/committee/accounting papers, initial listing management, fundraising management, regulatory reporting, management and financial reporting, budgets and forecasting, bookkeeping oversight, auditing and executive decision-making. Every day, I arrive at the office confident in the knowledge I will be making a positive contribution not only to Nexia Perth but also, for clients.

Sol Plaatje Housing Company
-
Kimberley Area, South Africa
-
Financial Accountant
-
Mar 2002 - Sep 2003
Sol Plaatje Housing Company aspired to move people living in poverty-stricken conditions into low cost, high quality modular housing connected to amenities expected in today’s world. Initially, Sol Plaatje Housing Company was seed funded (without share capital) by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), a Swedish government agency whose mission is to reduce global poverty. As you can imagine, Swedish influence was considerable with a number of Swedish experts and consultants (on secondment) adding a multicultural flavour to the project. As the project’s Financial Accountant, roles and responsibilities included liaising with international experts, collecting, analysing and interpreting data, preparing estimates and forecasts, advising on funding arrangements, installing cost and expenditure controls and managing statutory accounts. In what would prove a career and indeed, life defining decision, my next move took me across the Indian Ocean landing me in Perth, Western Australia.

Office of the Auditor-General, South Africa

Audit Supervisor
-
May 2000 - Feb 2002
The Office of the Auditor-General is the supreme audit institution of South Africa. The department is tasked with auditing and reporting on how the government spends South African taxpayers’ money. Furthermore, the Auditor-General (AGSA) produces annual audit reports on all government departments, public entities, municipalities and public institutions. In 2000, I moved from private to public practice taking up a position as Audit Supervisor with the Office of the Auditor-General. Not only do I believe in civic duty but I was keen to expand my accounting horizons specifically, conducting audits through the prism of the State. As Audit Supervisor, I was primarily tasked with planning and executing audits however, this also included leading audit teams. During my tenure, major audits included the Department of Health, the Department of Transport, Roads and Works and auditing the total personnel expenditure of all provincial departments. With over $200,000,000 (not indexed) in expenses audited, you can imagine the size of the final report! Skills developed and displayed included examining financial and accounting records, making judgements on estimates, obtaining confirmations, providing opinions and working within stringent parameters. Working in the Office of the Auditor-General required keen observation and an analytical mind. Reconciling data with interview responses and coming to an informed conclusion was no mean feat. After nearly two years with the Auditor-General, I was ready to tackle a new project, one which would allow me to directly make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate.

Accountant/Auditor
-
Mar 1998 - Apr 2000
PricewaterhouseCoopers is a global network of advisory firms specialising in assurance, advisory and tax services. A member of the Big Four, PwC offers services in 157 countries and employs more than 208,000 people. Post Deloitte, I picked up where I left off immediately reinhabiting the responsibilities of both an accountant and auditor. The role required preparing financial statements, account reconciliation, preparing tax returns, monitoring internal accounting control mechanisms, performing risk assessments, developing audit plans, reviewing work-papers, providing advice on tax, mergers, purchases and insolvency, liaising with external bodies (including auditors), preparing findings and other duties expected of accountants and auditors. PwC offered a unique insight into the machinations of a Big Four firm. Early in my experience, internal talent identification noticed my high attention to detail and problem-solving skills and thus, expedited my learning. For the next few years, I would refine my approach and come to appreciate the real nature of accounting: it’s about building trust and maintaining strong relationships with clients. After five years in private practice, the pull of contributing to the greater public good gripped me and I took up a position with the Office of the Auditor-General.

Accountant/Auditor

May 1995 - Feb 1998
Deloitte is a global network of firms providing audit, tax, legal, financial advisory, risk advisory and consulting services. A member of the Big Four, Deloitte operates in over 150 countries and territories and employs more than 260,000 people. In my full time introduction to the world of accounting, role responsibilities included analysing and reporting on financial information, examining and providing opinions on datasets, superannuation accounting, investment analysis, litigation preparation, valuations, audits and other general accounting duties. For some, working in a monolithic firm can prove daunting yet for me, I saw Deloitte as an opportunity. In organisations of considerable size and scale, available resources can be immense. I was determined not to let Deloitte’s knowledge-pool go to waste and like a sponge, soaked up all the tips, techniques, feedback and advice management was willing to offer. My time with Deloitte proved an invaluable experience however, the organisation’s decision to close its Kimberley office necessitated change and I took up a position with fellow Big Four firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.
