I met Hendrik for the first time as a recruiter for the Ph.D. position that I applied. Later, I had the opportunity to get to know him when I started my position as Doctoral representative on the executive board of the Jena school of microbial communication. I admire Hendrik's passion for supporting all his colleagues and caring for their success and happiness. He always boosts the mood in a group with his positive energy. His welcoming personality makes him easy to approach with different issues. He raised awareness about science ethics and mental health problems among our students. I've attended the workshops offered by him and I learnt how to improve my documents for job applications. On top of it, he reviewed my application documents within a short notice, supported me for the interview preparation and I am thankful to him. I believe Henrik is a reliable and empathic leader.

Hendrik joined the JSMC as a scientific manager and later, Head of Education during my time as a JSMC PhD researcher and PostDoc at the University of Jena. The arrival of Hendrik at the Graduate School was the beginning of great institutional changes at the school. He, from the get go, championed the welfare of PhD students in the school, the way it has never been done before. He brought awareness towards mental health in young researchers and went further to build a powerful institution around student mental health response and facilitated the matchmaking of struggling students with adequate resource persons. This is something that the University of Jena is really proud of today. Apart from the institutional reforms, I was opportuned to attend courses organized and taught by Hendrik. "Good Scientific Practice" and "Writing cover letters for industry applications" are a few of the skills I had acquired through attending courses taught by Hendrik. Hendrik also volunteered as a Patron of an Africa development NGO that I am a leader of. He brought his grant proposal writing and scientific event planning skills to help us in winning competitive grants. I recommend Hendrik without any form of reservations for managerial roles in education, research and capacity building.
