An independent charity offering advice, support and preventative services to young homeless people in Hertfordshire Most of their work is with young people aged 16-24 who have had difficulty in securing and maintaining safe, secure accommodation. Hyh recognises the importance of preventing homeless situations arising, particularly involving young people. Their experience has enabled them to develop mediation, education and other specialist prevention services with the aim of avoiding the misery of a breakdown in family relationships. Of course this is not always possible, and in those cases hyh aims to help the young people affected get the chance to fulfil their potential, despite their problems, through offering advice, support and other associated services. Homelessness can often lead to, and indeed result from, issues of drug and alcohol dependency and poor mental health. Hyh's experts in these areas work with people of all ages to support them in overcoming these challenges. They cooperate closely with Herts County Council, local district councils and other partner agencies in the provision of joined up services, sharing experiences to contribute to continuous improvement. The Michael Sobell Hospice charity (formerly the Friends of Michael Sobell House) is dedicated to supporting the work of Michael Sobell Hospice, providing specialised end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers. Michael Sobell Hospice is run by East and North Hertfordshire NHS and jointly funded by the NHS and the Michael Sobell Hospice charity. Each year our charity (formerly the Friends of Michael Sobell House) has to raise £1.5 million to ensure vital services are maintained, around 40% of the overall running costs. Thanks to the support of the local community, the charity contributes £2 of every £5 that is spent on patient care at the hospice. Show less
