  I am responsible for proofreading many of the PhD theses for graduate students at the California Institute of Technology. The quality of manuscripts can range from students whose grammar and spelling is near perfect to those for whom English is a second language and who need a great deal of help to bring their work up to a publishable standard. This fascinating work requires a strong understanding of science and an excellent grasp of English grammar and CMOS style.   During this period of my life I was responsible for the day-to-day running of a small parish church and the pastoral support of the parishioners. St Nicholas' Church had been through a lengthy period of decline, and was in a poor financial position. During my time at the church I increased membership, particularly among young families, boosted morale, and masterminded stewardship campaigns to improve finances.   During my time in Bridgwater I was the assistant to the Rector of a town center church, responsible for pastoral duties, day-to-day church administration, management of volunteers, and community outreach. This being essentially a training position, I had a certain amount of freedom to develop my own interests, and I spearheaded the launch, sourcing of financial support for, and administration of a small non-profit organization providing support for underprivileged families. The Rector retired at the beginning of my final year in this position, leading to me effectively taking on the role of Acting Rector, a function that would normally have been reserved for a more experienced priest.   I was responsible for developing billing strategies for medium-sized consumers of electricity in the initial stages of privatization of the electricity supply industry in the UK. During this time of extreme upheaval in the industry it was necessary to create individual tariff structures for large customers during a period when the necessary consumption data was very often not available. I developed techniques for accurately assessing patterns of energy usage upon which billing strategies could be based. Show less
