I have known Heidi for more than 10 years and watched the development of the Tangaroa Blue Foundation from a small local community group to a national organisation leading the way in understanding the marine debris issue in Australia and being commended across the world for contributing the marine conservation. Her love of the ocean and drive to make a difference continue to engage and inspire others in the community, governments and businesses to seek solutions for source reduction and healthier ocean environments. She has boundless energy and enthusiasm and a great skill in communicating the issues and bringing thousands along with her to promote positive actions for change.

Heidi's drive to affect real change in the world of marine debris solutions is inspirational. Her relentlessness to engage governments, businesses, organisations, and the public has created a country-wide community with international reach that is improving Australia's marine/shoreline habitats. Through Heidi's dedication Tangaroa Blue Foundation has evolved from a small beach cleanup organisation to a lead contributor to marine conservation on the world stage.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation is an Australian-wide not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the removal and prevention of marine debris, one of the major environmental issues worldwide. To assist in solving the problem, the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) was created, an on-ground network of volunteers, communities, organisations and partners that contribute data from rubbish collected during beach and river clean-up events to the AMDI Database, and then work on solutions to stop the flow of litter at the source. The AMDI helps communities look after their coastal environment by providing resources and support programs, and collaborates with industry and government to create change on a large scale. In 2004, I founded Tangaroa Blue Foundation and am currently the CEO of the charity and oversee the daily running of the organisation nationally. Through the AMDI program, Tangaroa Blue Foundation has engaged over 219,488 volunteers, who have removed over 21 million pieces of marine debris and submitted data on what they have collected to our Australian Marine Debris Database. Clean-up activities have taken place at more than 4,300 sites around the country, and assisted in the implementation of 300 Source Reduction Plans which work at mitigating marine debris at the source. Working on Poseidon Outer Reef Cruises gave me the opportunity to teach scuba diving, manage dive crew and passengers on day trips out to the awesome Great Barrier Reef. Surveyed for 100 passengers Poseidon is a well-known charter boat travelling out of Port Douglas, catering for tourists from around the world who want to experience the Great Barrier Reef through snorkel and dive activities. Dive instructor and dive supervisor duties on the vessel involved people management skills, dive knowledge and skills and an understanding of the offshore ocean environment to ensure passengers had both a safe and enjoyable trip.
