The Doctor of Ministry in Land, Food, and Faith Formation at Memphis Theological Seminary critically explores the intersections of ministry with care for the land, agricultural practices, just access to food, and the role of faith communities in both rural and urban settings in addressing these issues. Rev. Dr. Heber Brown, III taught a course entitled, "Higher Ground: A Theopraxis of Land & Food." Drawing upon biblical study, and theologies of the land and its care, this course attended to both God’s gracious gift of the land and human responsibilities to care for the land. The role of faith communities in care for the land, including the role of agricultural practices, were addressed in light of biblical and theological resources. Show less

This course explored ways in which an attunement to natural and human ecologies and to legacies of food justice movements orient ministry leadership, both in imagining new ways of being church and in witnessing to God's restorative work in the world. Dr. Heber Brown will led students in an exploration of the oft overlooked connections between food sovereignty and Black churches. Beginning with the context of the Black Freedom Struggle of the 20th century, he presented modern practices of Christian leadership in the context of urban food security issues. Show less
