Teaching Assistant

Sep 2013 - May 2014
I planned activities and lessons for French middle school students to encourage them to speak English, improve their pronunciation and communicate effectively. I worked with groups of students and with the teacher with the entire class, using songs, skits, videos and games. My role was to engage them in a foreign culture and present authentic American English and ways of speaking. I interned at a nonprofit that runs a library in Cange, Haiti and works to increase literacy in the Central Plateau. I translated documents in French for the director of the organization. I helped develop programs, such as an exchange between schools in Greenville and Haiti and creating a partnership with a library in Guadeloupe. I researched relevant books in French and Haitian Creole to expand the library, so that more members of the community in Cange could benefit. I studied literature in both English and French. Most of the time, I read literature and critical articles and write analytical papers. My classes were mostly discussion-based, and included research-based assignments and group projects. I also wrote articles for the school newspaper, the Paladin, and amwasa member of the Furman University Student Activities Board, where I helped plan events on campus. I helped students review and improve their writing skills when I worked at the Studio Lab during my sophomore year, and I also tutored students in French.
