    • Surface Warfare Officer
      • Dec 2007 - Nov 2013

As a Surface Warfare Officer onboard USS BULKELEY and USS EISENHOWER, my duties were three-fold. 1.) Division Officer: I managed up to 70 personnel in my division. This included managing their daily work, approving their administrative requests, ensuring good quality of life, and formerly evaluating their work. As a Division Officer, I was responsible for over $500 million worth of equipment onboard. I had to ensure the equipment I was responsible for was properly maintained with routine and corrective maintenance. My equipment was nearly always up and functioning, and my Division received the highest marks on the ship for best maintenance and documentation of that maintenance. 2.) Ship's Operations and Missions: As a Surface Warfare Officer, my main role was to lead the ship's operations, missions and navigation at sea of a $1 billion warship. As Officer of the Deck underway I lead the crew, under orders of the Commanding Officer, to carry out the ship's mission. This involved coordinating the efforts of various teams onboard to reach a common goal. My role as Officer of the Deck leading these missions often meant directly overseeing other officers and training them in the high-stress environment. I learned how to stay calm, maximize training opportunities for my team and execute the goal with precision. 3.) Collateral Duties: As an Officer onboard a Navy ship, you share responsibilities that outnumber the Officers available. As a team, we tackled these extra responsibilities so we could provide more for the crew. For example, I also served as Morale Welfare and Recreation Officer to provide healthy living and fun activities on and off the ship, Repair Locker Officer to lead emergency fire teams in the case of a fire onboard, Training Officer to ensure sailors in the engineering department are receiving professional development opportunities, and many more.
