Over 20 years of experience in mentoring and teaching graduate and medical students as well as leadership in departmental and wider university programs. Director of the Pharmacology and Physiology graduate program. Co-director of the Systems Pharmacology and Physiology graduate course. Co-director of the key pre-clinical course, Principles of Immunology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, for the medical school curriculum. Instrumental in the successful creation of this module that places therapeutics in the context of immunity and infection. Teacher in pharmacology and physiology for the above courses as well as three other pre-clinical medical school modules and two additional graduate level courses. Successfully mentored six graduate students through their Ph.D. studies and on to rewarding careers. Pioneered a relationship with Youth Exploring Science at the St Louis Science Center to provide laboratory experiences to high school students, most of whom are underrepresented minorities with an aim to increase minority representation in Science and Medicine. As a measure of success two of our alumni are currently studying science, one a pre-med at Washington University and one majoring in Biology at Jackson State. Researched questions underlying the breakdown in cell to cell communication that occurs in cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Obtained funding for this research amounting to over $4 million in total costs. Published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to two key chapters in the preeminent medical textbook in the field of pharmacology, Goodman and Gillman’s The Pharmacological Basis for Therapeutics, 13th ed.
