  Master candidate at the department of Databases and Information Systems under the supervision of Dr. Berberich. The topic of the thesis is the retrospective summarization on a text-based corpus(All issues of the New York Times between 1987 and 2007). The main goal is to find the most influential events during different eras( 1980s, 1990s and 2000s) using the summarization. The main technique involved is to create a timeline using the time stamps of the news articles and cluster them using streaming k-means. After that, the clusters will be ranked according several criteria (time span of the documents, number of documents in the cluster, and the average length of the documents), and the articles will also be ranked within each cluster using the similarity, the influence and the novelty. The top n articles will be selected as the representative documents of the cluster. The results are compared with the baseline - the annually event lists on Wikipedia, and several evaluations are done on the results. The implementation was done with Java and PostgreSQL. Show less
