Clinical placement Logan Hospital - 7 weeks - This placement provided me the opportunity to conduct small group gestational diabetes education sessions. I worked on gastrointestinal/surgical/orthopaedic wards for most of my placement period. Brisbane South Chronic Disease Service - 3 weeks - This placement opportunity provided me with the opportunity to extend my skills and knowledge in Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Chronic Obstructive Respiratory Disease. I undertook consultations with clients collecting relevant information, providing education and setting goals with the clients. Food Service Project 1 - What foods and drinks would patients like to receive during an inpatient admission at Logan Hospital? Developed a survey tool to use when interviewing inpatients at Logan hospital to determine what foods they would like to be offered during their admission. This was a great project to undertake, provided an insight into patients likes/dislikes, feelings about hospital food and provided a great opportunity to improve patient communication skills alongside communication skills with staff members in the nutrition department, food service department and staff on wards, especially NUM's, nursing staff and administration. Presented our results and recommendations to all dietetic staff in a presentation and in a report. Project 2 - Risk Analysis of Renal Therapeutic Diets at Logan Hospital. The aim of this study was to conduct a risk analysis of patients who were previously placed on a renal therapeutic diet during an inpatient admission compared to patients who are now on the equivalent ‘full’ hospital diet. Developed a survey which was used to survey current inpatients and current haemodialysis outpatients. Also used computer software program ERIC to search retrospectively patients biochemical markers to determine whether any significant impact on patient serum electrolytes have occurred since the cessation of the renal therapeutic diet.
