Laboratory Assistant
-
3/2018 - 7/2019
I began as an intern in Michelle Power’s biological science lab that researches antibiotic resistance in Australian wildlife. I created a parasite identification manual for Tasmanian devils through oocyst purification and microscopy photography. I also assisted a PhD student with parasite identification and abundance count for brushtail possum samples through fecal floats. I was then contracted for an individual research project testing cryptosporidium in Australian fur seals through DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis.

Field Research Assistant
-
3/2018 - 7/2018
I was a field assistant for a study on invasive red foxes, Vulpes vulpes, in urban areas of Sydney, Australia looking for lethal control sites that minimize non-target species take. As part of this preliminary study I was responsible for liaising with land owners and local land services for study site acquisitions, as well as set-up, maintenance, and removal of camera traps and non-lethal bait. I was also responsible for data entry and used DigiKam to tag pictures with relevant information for statistical analysis. I independently analyzed the temporal activity of foxes and non-target species using ‘R’ as a potential further aspect for deploying lethal bait.

Wildlife Caregiver
-
10/2015 - 12/2016
As a wildlife caretaker I was responsible for the daily care of rehab and sanctuary wildlife, with a focus on the predatory species of southern California. My duties involved food preparation of specific diet requirements for each species, medication dosing and administration, and proper food distribution, depending on age and situation. I also provided direct medical care for injured individuals, which involved handling and restraining a variety of species, wound treatment, and making decisions on overall care. I trained 20+ new interns and volunteers on proper animal husbandry techniques, as well as provided administration assistance with data entry and zoological database management, office organization, and liaising with donors and the public. I began here as an intern and was hired full-time after 6 months.
