The Bakari Micro Loans program is a small loans and business mentorship program offered to A.K.I.N. (African Kids in Need) graduates and their families who wish to start their own small businesses. With in-country support, guidance and hard work of AKIN Program Manager, David Oketch, Bakari has funded 10 loans for businesses varying from tuk tuk and Uber driving and a medical clinic, to hair salons and community food stores. A.K.I.N. (African Kids in Need) was founded in 2007 by Paul Miller (USA) in response to the closure of a children's home in Nairobi, Kenya, leaving 240 children displaced. Since that time, AKIN has funded every one of these children through primary, secondary and often tertiary level school so that they be given the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Bakari is an extension of that mission as these now young adults step into their careers. Show less

Mukuru Clean Stoves is a social enterprise that designs, produces and distributes improved, reliable and affordable cookstoves for low-income households in Kenya. Charlot works every day to empower women to eradicate household air pollution in their own homes and communities. Through her work, she continually considers the social, environmental and indeed, financial impacts of her decisions to maximise her impact model. It is inspiring to see someone work diligently to expand employment opportunities for women, while incorporating a closed-loop opportunity for waste metals, with the purpose of eradicating a pervasive and preventable health problem. As an advisor, I help Charlot develop effective business processes to manage the rapid growth in her business. Together, we focus on business planning, accounting and loan management, whilst sharing ideas, stories and a wonderful cross-cultural friendship. I have proudly watched Mukuru Clean Stoves grow over the last five years and look forward to what is to come for Mukuru! Show less

I proudly contributed to the building of positive social value of Vitality Brands, a privately owned Australian FMCG company. I did this by developing strategies, processes and targets with functional leaders and their teams to help them implement and embed valuable social and environmental practices into their everyday activities. Building a fun, innovative, inclusive sustainability strategy from the ground up at Vitality included: 🌿 Embedding beyond compliance standards of ethical sourcing and product stewardship across all brands, including creating rigorous ethical sourcing, packaging sustainability and waste reduction roadmaps, and achieving 100% Low CO2 certification and Carbon Neutral Product certification. 📊 Establishing and embedding an ESG framework that formally elevates our sustainability values to sit within the definition of business success. 🤝 Creating equity building brand partnerships that use brands as platforms to create positive impact aligned to Vitality's brands, consumers and people. 🙌🏻 Creating a culture of sustainability innovation and adaptability by collectively setting a high bar for the way we operate, how we treat others and for how we carry out Vitality's company’s Purpose and Promise. Proudly, Vitality made GoodCompany's "Best Workplaces to Give Back" list in both 2020 & 2021, ranking 27th and 19th respectively! Vitality were also finalists in the 2021 Corporate Kindness Awards (Bambuddha) in the categories of Kindness to Customers and Kind CEO. Show less
