As a senior lecturer at Massey University I was responsible for a paper on toxic and hazardous substances including their risk assessment and management. Since it was important for my students to have an understanding of current realities and practicalities in the 'real world' I networked with those who were working in this field including Haydn who was working for ERMA ( later NZEPA) . My discussions with him provided current, relevant and grounded insights and examples that were very useful and important in complementing the more academic content of this paper.

On contract to the NZ EPA as a Data Analyst. I worked on the Hazardous Substances Modernisation Project with a focus on determining the fate of all Hazardous Substance approvals granted over the last 15 years. I completed the key tasks in two thirds of the time allocated to a standard that exceeded expectations. On contract to the NZ EPA as a Data Analyst. From 2001 - 2006, I worked on the Transfer of Substances Project which included the evaluation of physical, toxicological and ecotoxicological data on Pesticides, Veterinary Medicines, Dangerous Goods and Scheduled Toxic Substances, with the aim of using risk management principles to establish appropriate controls to manage their hazards safely throughout their full life-cycle (from importation or manufacture to use and ultimate disposal).
