The Research and Evaluation Division (RED) of BRAC was established in 1975, and over time it evolved as a multi-disciplinary independent research unit within the framework of BRAC. The division has been playing an integral role in designing BRAC’s development interventions, monitoring progress, documenting achievements, and undertaking impact assessment studies. It provides an analytical basis for BRAC’s programmatic decisions, fine-tuning it for better performance and making development efforts evidence-based, effective, and community-sensitive. RED conducts programme-driven research in agriculture, applied and reproductive health, communicable and non-communicable diseases, education, environment, extreme poverty, food security and nutrition, microfinance, and social development and human rights. The division also caters to issues of national and international importance independently and in collaboration with reputed academic institutions and international agencies. RED also extends research support to overseas programmes of BRAC in Asia and Africa.RED’s research activities are coordinated under the following 8 research units: Development Economics, Agricultural Economics, Educational, Social Development, Impact Assessment, Health, Nutrition, and Environment. These research units are supported by three specialized units: field operations, data management and knowledge management. Research is also carried out in a number of Asian countries, coordinated by BRAC international Research for Asia located at RED. The research findings are disseminated through a range of oral and print media. Since inception, it has produced nearly 1,452 Working papers (Formerly known as research report), 451 journal articles, 303 book and book chapters, 25 theses, 76 research monographs, 113 research reports, 563 RED newsletter, 27 volumes of Nirjash - a research compendium in lucid Bangla language, 297 popular articles in newspapers (as of March 2017). In 2002, BRAC started its first international operation by venturing into Afghanistan. Since then, we have continued to play a significant role in the country’s development. We provide essential services and support in 95 districts under 14 provinces and hard to reach communities. With support from the UK’s Department for International Development, our education project ensures secondary, higher secondary, technical and vocational education for over 49,000 girls. We work on systematic reform to improve access and performance of students, primarily through community based schools and hub schools after graduation. Our approach improves participation, raises awareness on gender equality and child rights, and encourages ownership of the community. The Ministry of Public Health guides us in reducing the prevalence of malaria. We work with female community health workers to assist the government in improving access to quality health care, especially for new mothers and children. We support social development projects in partnership with the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development through the Citizen’s Charter programme. We work with communities, as well as provincial and national level officials of the Ministry, to build their rural infrastructure. We are also building capacity through our BRAC Training and Resource Centre in Kabul. We train our staff, as well staff from other organisations in the public and private sector. Show less
