In my time at FPCR, I undertook 6 consecutive weeks of intensive bat emergence/re-entry surveys at a site in Cornwall. This involved back-to-back dusk-dawn surveys from Monday to Friday each week. It not only allowed me to further develop my bat identification skills, but truly tested my ability to adapt to working unsociable hours on a regular basis and to maintain the high concentration and attention to detail needed for these surveys for the entirety of each week. I also assisted on a number of interior and exterior building inspections for bats. Show less

Working as a seasonal field surveyor has provided me with essential experience in conducting protected species surveys including bat surveys (activity and emergency/re-entry), reptile surveys and dormouse surveys. I am also accustomed to working unsociable hours, driving long distances and staying away from home. This was a hugely inspiring experience for me. I completed a 4 week placement with the Environment Agency at the Starcross water testing laboratory in the position of an Assistant Scientist. This involved being supervised and subsequently working independently in a professional laboratory where my principle role was to extract Organophosphate pesticides from water samples to prepare them for analysis. Not only did this fuel my ability to work as part of a team and independently, but also demonstrated my capability to learn quickly and put my organisational skills to use. Show less
