Business Insight Week Attendee
-
Aug 2019 - Aug 2019
In August 2019 I undertook a week’s work experience with one of the largest professional services firms in the world, PricewaterhouseCoopers. While participating in the BIW I spent time in three areas, Audit, Consulting and Tax. While in Audit I was mentored on what it actually means to audit a company and what makes a company eligible for audit. In Consulting I spent time with an associate who was enthusiastic about showing me the advice a consultant has to offer and how they can rectifying a business’s issues by simply taking an outside view, using their vast experience to recognise the issue and then suggest a plan of action to stop the issue from occurring. I was also fortunate enough to speak to a Partner at PwC who works for Strategy&, who informed of the work he does and how through strategy planning businesses can increase profits and efficiency. The tax department organised a day of meetings with those from within the corporate tax for me to speak to, this was very insightful. I had a conversation with a specialist in international tax, which helped me understand the complexity of tax obligations and how certain decisions can have large repercussions if not thought through. I also spoke to a Senior Associate who specialises in Capital allowances and R&D, who ran through the laws coming into practice in the future and how they will benefit businesses and encourage research within them; additionally he covered Capital allowances and how it works on depreciation basis which is different to that used when compiling audit data.

Allowed me to understand key concepts in this area such as Bid/Offer and both methods of valuation, relative (using multiples from similar businesses to work out the value of the one at hand) and intrinsic (based on the predicted future growth of the business using its EBIT and multiple other factors from past accounts) as well as getting a feel for what the job may entail.
