1993 - Present
The inception of a contaminated sites industry in the early 1990's drew my attention as an opportunity to combine a strong scientific background with business development skills. My passion is to be the best at solving the myriad business problems which arise from regulatory-driven environmental issues. This is problem solving at its best with the need to balance business, regulatory and technical factors within serious cost and time constraints; and the need to obtain third-party Ministry of Environment endorsement in the form of Certificates of Compliance. In the contaminated sites industry, this skill has been rewarded by complex brownfield challenges which have ranged from "technologically impossible" multi-million dollar cleanups, to remediation of B.C.'s largest shipyard, and many others in between. First Mercantile was a consultancy focusing on business development, marketing and sales for a variety of clients seeking to re-position themselves and expand. My clients included such diverse operations as a Chinese food manufacturer for which I created a brand and obtained listing on Safeway and Costco store shelves, and various franchise chains including Circle K convenience stores for Shell Canada. I was hired into the International Corporate Credit team of Scotiabank at the end of my MBA studies at University of British Columbia. After initial training for 1.5 years in head office, I was transferred to Jakarta, Indonesia in a sales development role to obtain business from large, successful corporate clients. Working with one other Representative in that office, and having studied diligently to learn conversational Indonesian, I became successful in generating significant credit business. Sponsored by the National Research Council, I was involved in expanding my research of fish population ecology and genetics into evolutionary behaviour. My colleagues were heavily engaged in fish research world-wide, providing an intellectual environment for exchange of ideas between British schools of thought and mainland Europe.
